General Tips

  • Generators should NEVER be operated in doors or even in the garage with the door open.
  • Your fridge will not spoil over night. There is no need to run your generator all night unless for medical reasons.
  • Your home will also hold heat for many hours even in the coldest parts of winter.
  • If you do not have a stand by generator that exercises it self, be sure to change fuel and oil in between prolonged times of no usage. It is recommended to start and exercise you generator for a few minutes every 30 days.
  • Even in emergency situations, be mindful of your neighbours. Halifax by law N-200 states no noise after 9:30pm until 7am.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions
  • NEVER back feed your home. This is dangerous to line crews working to restore power to your home.
  • Never refill the generator while running and always allow a cool down time.
  • Limit your cord length if you do not have an electrician install a proper system. Never exceed 100’ on a 12/2 extension cord. The voltage drop on longer runs can cause premature appliance motor and compressor burnout.
  • Never let your generator run out of fuel. As the generator dies, this can cause fluctuation in voltages.
  • Always call Novatech Electric
